If you have questions about income or property taxes…
Knox County Workshop:
State Property Tax on Tue, Mar 20, 5:30-7:30 pm at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St
SWOAM, the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, has partnered with the Maine Forest Service, Internal Revenue Service, Maine Revenue Service, and Maine’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts to bring 12 tax workshops to landowners in March. These workshops are free, and everyone is welcome. Presenters are Jim Norris, Morten Moesswilde and Lisa Whynot.
Jim Norris, IRS Forester for nearly 30 years, will present 5 workshops on federal income tax for woodland owners. His presentation will include types of forest ownership, cost and income considerations, establishing basis, determining loss or gain, and much more. Jim will present an example of an actual Maine property. He will also hold ‘office hours’ during the day for anyone with questions about how to file harvesting taxes. Please call if you would like to reserve a time slot.
For help with state property taxes, Lisa Whynot from from the Maine Revenue Service, will present 7 workshops on Maine’s Current Use Property Tax in coordination with the local District Forester from the Maine Forest Service. Topics to be discussed include the Tree Growth, Open Space, and Farmland tax law. These are the three primary ‘Current Use’ property tax programs that may be of great interest to landowners and local town assessors. Come hear the latest!
If you are looking for reliable and authoritative answers to your tax questions, make plans to attend any of these workshops. There will be time for questions and discussion after each presentation. These meetings are free and open to the public. However, because the workshop will be cancelled if there are not at least 10 people attending, please call the number listed on the workshop to RSVP.
Note: In the event of adverse weather conditions, please check the SWOAM website at www.swoam.org for notice of cancellation or call the SWOAM office at (207) 626-0005.
These workshops are brought to you, in part, the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM). We are a statewide non-profit that has been providing a voice and a resource for Maine’s small woodland owners for more than 37 years. To learn more, check out www.swoam.org or visit us on Facebook.
