Volunteer Opportunities

The District delivers many interesting projects, events and meetings throughout the year - and we often need extra minds and hands.

There is sure to be an opportunity that is perfectly suited to your interests or skills.

Here are just a few of the events or projects that could use your special attention:

Event Organizing

Help organize our Conservation Fair, Annual Plant Sale and various Fundraisers throughout the year. Whether you know a lot about event organizing, or not, we could use your help.

Environmental Education

We need volunteers for our programs:

Read ME Agriculture, NACD Poster Contest , Envirothon, and Enviroscape Watershed Model

Woodworking

Are you looking for a winter shop project?

We need bird houses, bat houses, and native bee nesting kits to sell at our Plant Sale. We also need some simple wooden frames built for plant sale signs.

Associate Supervisors

In addition to our voting board, the District is advised by non-voting associates with a variety of skills or backgrounds - foresters, farmers, town managers, conservation commission members, contractors, accountants, arborists, teachers, to name a few. The main requirement is a strong interest in conservation or conservation education!

Local Working Groups

(LWG)

The Local Working Groups of Knox/Waldo and Lincoln/Kennebec counties make recommendations to National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on how to spend USDA Farm Bill funds for conservation practices on private lands.

If you are

  • an agricultural producer;

  • forester, logger or private woodland owner;

  • member of an environmental or watershed organization or land trust;

  • knowledgeable in soil, water, plant, wetland or wildlife sciences; and/or

  • familiar with local agricultural and natural resource concerns,

we invite you to attend this meeting to help

1) identify and prioritize conservation concerns in our region; and 2) recommend how local funds for USDA conservation programs will be distributed by NRCS to alleviate problems.

LWG meetings are held in December, January or February.

If you would like to attend a meeting, get in touch with Julie at julie@knox-lincoln.org or 596-2040.
