How many fish should I order?

There are many factors when determining the number of fish a pond can support such as water temperature, available food, water flow, depth and surface area.

Surface area is a good starting point to estimate capacity: 50 (4-6″), 40 (6-8″), 30 (8-10″) fish per 1/4 acre surface area.

Pond Surface Area: 1/4 acre # of Fish 6" and larger: 50

Pond Surface Area: 1/2 acre # of Fish 6" and larger: 100

Pond Surface Area:  1 acre # of Fish 6" and larger: 150 - 250

Food supply and water quality, such as colder temperature, increase carrying capacity.

If you are unsure about brook trout’s ability to survive in your pond, we encourage you start small or keep a record of pond water temperature at its deepest location or monitor for dissolved oxygen during July, August and September.
